On the cover of today's News Sentinel, there's an article about a mural in the University Center. The mural depicts music across Tennessee, and is somewhat controversial (and/or stereotypical) in its depiction of the music from Memphis. I sped read the article this morning and I swear it comes across like this mural was just recently discovered hiding beneath the paneled walls of the UC. Guess what??? This mural was "discovered" less than 10 years ago. I remember because I kept the Daily Beacon article revealing how the mural had been covered up because of its controversial/stereotypical depiction of West Tennessee's music scene. Does the News Sentinel article mention this? No. The person behind the "discovery" of the mural is on an Issues committee and the N-S article claims (or appears to me to claim) that the credit for discovery belongs solely to this guy who wrote some Issues committee paper urging....something. (Did I mention I sped read the article?) I am so tempted to write the journalist and tell he or she that this mural was discovered 8-10 years ago and featured 2-3 days worth of Daily Beacon articles. I bet if I dug through the bottom of my bookshelf or underneath my bed, I could find the exact DB article and cover photo. |
